Back to school – or not!

1st Jun 2020

To anyone with kids either going back to school or not going back to school; to those whose kids are permitted to go back to school because of the year group they are in or because of other reasons; to those whose kids are not permitted to go back to school because they are not in the designated year groups; to anyone who is choosing to send their kids to school this week and to anyone who is choosing to keep their children home…… and to anyone else reading this and feeling overwhelmed by it all right now….this message is for you.

We are all still in this together. That hasn’t changed. Please don’t feel pressured by what another family is or is not doing. Remember – there is no right or wrong answer to this. All we can all do is use our instincts to decide what is best for our unique and individual circumstances.

Some children may thrive on a return to school, others may struggle. Some families may need the return to school, others may function better by staying together as a family unit. None of the options are wrong but none of them are right either. This may well be the hardest thing you have, and possibly will ever, live through – because what unsettles a lot of us the most is the ‘not knowing’ and ‘uncertain’ element to this. A lot of us gain security from structure and safety and that’s been completely swept from under us. But remember – our instincts are sometimes what serve us best.

Someone once said to me that you’ll never know if you have made the right choice, you will only ever know if it’s the wrong one. Never has this been more true. So be kind to yourself and to each other. This isn’t the time to judge others for their decisions, it’s the time to be kind and offer them support in their decisions and to expect the same from others towards you. Let the community spirit we have seen demonstrated throughout this lockdown experience continue forward. Let’s look after one another and our kids as we take these next uncertain steps into the future.

BulliesOut is here for you and for your kids as we move forward together. Take a look at all of the resources we have added to our website.

Reach out if you need us. And remember as Baz Luhrmann so eloquently put it : ‘your choices are half chance, and so are everybody else’s´!
