Trigger Warnings: bullying, mention of the word rape

Suffering from bullying and abuse can have lifelong effects on a person – something the writer of this poem knows only too well.  Michelle was also bullied at work for many years which led to her leaving a job she loved so much.

Michelle has recently written a poem which she very kindly said we could share:

It wasn’t my fault I was born a girl
Or that I had a brain that worked
But to my father and his parents
I was an unwanted “gift” they shirked.
When I was 3, I’d just begun
To know what dreams and nightmares were
The 1st to become a Midwife
The 2nd to say Daddy stop, be mean to me no more.
Halfway thru my ‘A ‘ levels
My hopes and dreams came true
When Midwifery school came calling
And said Michelle, we really do want you.
I passed my diploma 1st time
Nothing could remove my smile
That was until a short while back
When in life I re-became a frightened child.
At 27 broken, bruised and raped
Brainwashed by men in life it was what I had to take
But surely nothing now could stop me if I
Toiled, studied and I martyrd, but I was just a fake.
People lied and turned their backs
Fat shamed, and broken, my life had gone to bits
Whilst the earth turned on its axis
Mine felt like it was in the pits.
Even death did not want me.
X7 was just to no avail
But now I have lovely Linda and amazing Amie
Who have made this awful journey one much easier to sail.
